The more I think about it the more I think that most people do not set out to think or behave in a sectarian way. Nor do most of our institutions or groups. It is more a matter of unawareness, at least initially. However we can drift in an unthinking, un-self critical way into such thinking and behaving, when the legitimate human need for belonging and identity gets distorted and becomes unhealthly exclusive. Difference then becomes something to fear rather than to be enjoyed and celebrated. Sectarianism settles in and makes itself at home. I believe it becomes bigotry when we become aware of our exclusiveness and choose to embrace it and act out of it.
